Paradigm Shift in Reconfigurable Computing

چکیده

As per the Moore's law, the number of transistors that could be placed on a single integrated circuit has been increasing exponentially, and today has reached the stage where the implementation of multiple processor cores on a single chip has become a reality. As a result, the capacity of modern FPGA devices will soon support the implementation of hundreds to thousands of soft microprocessor cores on a single chip. With improvements in technology, Moore's law will start applying to processors rather than gates, and will lead to various heterogeneous programmable processors getting embedded on an FPGA. Hence, the complexity levels of the next-generation FPGAs will be simply too high to be handled by low-level hardware design skills and even C-to-gates languages combined with high-level synthesis tools. To date, the direction of the FPGA development has been solely focused on performance, rather than productivity. The theme of this paper is to emphasize the shift in paradigm from the old traditional approach, differentiating between hardware programmers and software programmers, to a new paradigm wherein these boundaries are to be overcome and a unified community of programmers are provided tools to unleash the benefits of the growing potential of reconfigurable hardware using a software controlled environment.

FPGAs as Computing Platform

Since the discovery of Moore’s Law advances in hardware have shown to fulfill it accurately. However, maintaining that fact seems to be increasingly difficult[1]. The von Neumann architecture suffers from drawbacks that have become known as the von Neumann Syndrome[2]. Inefficient data transmission through the memory wall and instruction-stream-based sequencing are the source of its illness. To...

Implementation of VlSI Based Image Compression Approach on Reconfigurable Computing System - A Survey

Image data require huge amounts of disk space and large bandwidths for transmission. Hence, imagecompression is necessary to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital image. Thereforean efficient technique for image compression is highly pushed to demand. Although, lots of compressiontechniques are available, but the technique which is faster, memory efficient and simple, surely...

Large-Scale Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations with Reconfigurable Computing

We describe the shift in paradigm that the algorithm developer must undertake in order to design efficient numerical solutions using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and reconfigurable computing in general. FPGAs and reconfigurable computing can bring a new dimension to the algorithm design process, with potentially huge gains in algorithm speed, and significant reductions in cost and pow...

Physical 2D Morphware and Power Reduction Methods for Everyone

Dynamic and partial reconfiguration discovers more and more the focus in academic and industrial research. Modern systems in e.g. avionic and automotive applications exploit the parallelism of hardware in order to reduce power consumption and to increase performance. State of the art reconfigurable FPGA devices allows reconfiguring parts of their architecture while the other configured architec...

Why we need Reconfigurable Computing Education

Reconfigurable Computing, the second RAM-based machine paradigm offers drastic reduction of the electric energy budget and speedup factors by several orders of magnitude compared to using the von Neumann paradigm, now loosing its dominance. This paper advocates to introduce a dual paradigm transdisciplinary education by using Configware Engineering as the counterpart of Software Engineering. by...
